Our visionary Tonya Cross is the organizer of local community conversation “Peace Circle” that launched in July 2015. The Peace Circle creates a safe space for open and honest dialogue about social issues that impact the local community. The conversations are held the first Tuesday of every month at Mean Mug Coffee Company, 1024 S. Fulton Street, Salisbury NC.
Peace Circle hosted their first parent/child workshop sessions “What’s Your Role In The Village?” in September 2015 which addressed how systemic racism, discrimination, and stereotypes impacts the local community. A Young Black Man Going Ego Trippin’ photo series was inspiration for artwork and poetry created by local youth who attended the workshops. Mrs. Carla Marlin Smith a parent engagement specialist at Parent University of Chapel Hill – Carrboro City Schools was the workshop facilitator. Ms. Anneca Raines of Uhkneeka Rainz Photography is the photographer of the photo series.

The Vine Events’ Facebook Group “Digital Marketing On A Budget” is hosting our first group challenge! During the month of June, we’re kicking off our Promo Video Challenge. Each group member is being challenged to create a promotional video. At the beginning of each week, members will be given a task to complete by the end of the week. The goal is to have a promotional video for their brand/business by the end of the month! If you are interested in joining the challenge, simply click on the photo below to join our Facebook Group!
I created Digital Marketing On A Budget Facebook group last year in May. I designed the group for my friends who are also fellow entrepreneurs to share resources I’ve stumbled upon during my brand building journey!
The group initially started out as a private group, but I recently opened it up so others can join! I’m a giver by nature and want everyone to succeed in their endeavors. I’m still using the space to share what I have learned and continue to learn as the visionary of an organization and brand.
Many of the group members and myself are forty plus in age and face some challenges when it comes to technology! Fortunately, there are user friendly marketing resources that assist us as we travel the digital journey together. More importantly, most of the resources are either free or low cost and don’t put a big dent in our budgets!
I’m currently trying to build the group. My plan is to start hosting group challenges to engage our group members. I’m looking forward to learning and growing our brands together!

The film Gifted is amazing! I had the opportunity to recently attend the premiere screening of the movie starring Chris Evans, Mckenna Grace, and Octavia Spencer. Grace who plays a 7-year-old child prodigy named Mary Adler steals the show. The only thing that is missing is her two front teeth! She instantly wins the hearts of the audience and draws you into the story of a uncle’s single parent journey as primary caregiver to his niece. It’s a beautiful journey of loss, obstacles, and triumph.
The character in the film I liked the most was Fred; the one-eyed cat! He provided comfort and personified normality for a little girl who was far from average. Mary was academically gifted in mathematics. Her uncle Frank Adler, played by Chris Evans, promised her deceased mother (his sister) that he’ll make sure her daughter experience childhood and not allow her gift to rob her of it.
To avoid any spoilers, I’m going to stop sharing about this wonderful film and recommend you go see it for yourself! It opens Friday, April 7th in limited theaters and nation wide on Wednesday, April 12th. For more information about Gifted, click here!

I blogged that I hired a nutritionist to create a personal meal plan a few months ago. My focus was to reduce my BMI (Body Mass Index) based on a recent health assessment from my 9-5 job. As I shared in my December post Nutrition: The Missing Link, the foods recommended in the meal plan I already had in my kitchen! It was simply a matter of eating the right foods in combination, increasing my water intake, and exercising regularly.
During this journey, I’ve learned much about clean eating and its benefits. Clean eating is primarily about meal preparation and nutritious food choices. I’ve also experimented with some quick and easy recipes recommended by my nutritionist that accommodated my busy lifestyle.
Within three months, I lost a total of 20 pounds and 16 inches! I lost the most inches from my waist; 8 inches to be exact. I reached a few weight plateaus during the process but, increasing my water intake and exercise was a quick resolve.
Overall, this was a wonderful and much-needed experience. I decided to continue with the nutrition plan and have since exceeded my initial weight loss goal of 20 pounds! I’m so glad that I made my health a priority and sought the service of a nutritionist. My nutritionist Shlandra at Balance By Burton was very knowledgeable and my biggest cheerleader. Her expertise was key to my success and I highly recommend her services. Click Balance By Burton to reach Shlandra on Facebook and begin your healthy nutrition journey!
